Xiuqin comes from Chinese. It joins two written parts. Xiù (秀) means elegant or refined, the word used for a plant that flowers and a person who stands out. Qín (琴) names the guqin, the seven-string zither that scholars once counted among the four arts, beside chess, calligraphy, and painting. Read together, the two parts give the meaning set down here: elegant lute.
The guqin is old. Players have plucked its silk strings for more than two thousand years, and a woman named for it holds the instrument in her name rather than in her hands.
In Poland the name lands on paper first. A clerk at the urząd copies Xiuqin into a form, and in September a teacher reads it from the class register. There is no Polish diminutive for it, no Xiuqinka. The name stays as its two characters made it: 秀琴, elegant lute.
