Xiaofen

Xiaofen comes to a Polish register from Mandarin Chinese, where it is usually written 晓芬. The first character, xiǎo, names the moment of daybreak. The second, fēn, means fragrance, the smell of something in bloom. Put together they give the plain sense recorded here: dawn, fragrance.

The name has no diminutives, no variant. It keeps its two syllables on a birth certificate and on a class register. A Polish teacher reading it at the urząd, or aloud in September, meets the sound as it stands, xiao-fen, with nothing shortened.

In China the name belongs mostly to women, and it stayed common through the middle of the twentieth century, when single-character given names like fēn were widely used. That character appears in many women's names of the period, so a Xiaofen born then often shared her second half with a Xiaomei nearby. The morning half is hers. Xiǎo is the light before the sun clears the roofline, held next to the scent of early flowers.
