What Xavery means

Where Xavery comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Xavery comes into Polish through the Latin Xaverius. That form belonged to Saint Francis Xavier, a sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary. His surname pointed back to a family estate, a place whose name meant new house. That estate is long gone. The meaning outlasted the house.

The variant most Poles recognize is Ksawery, spelled with an opening K. Xavery keeps the Latin X instead. The two spellings sound the same. On a school class register it can look like a guest from another alphabet, though it settles fast into an ordinary roll call.

Ksawery and Xavery share a name-day on 3 December, the feast of Francis Xavier. A boy named for that saint also holds an old word. Both forms point back, through Xaverius, to new house.
