The name Xiaoqing comes from Chinese, written 小青. The first part, xiǎo, means "little." The second, qīng, names a colour that sits between blue and green, the shade of new leaves and river water. Put together they read as "little green," or mała zieleń in Polish.
Qīng gives the name most of its character. Chinese poets used qīng for young grass, for jade, for the dark of a raven's wing. The colour was never fixed to one wavelength. So Xiaoqing points at something fresh and unripe, a green that has only just arrived.
One bearer is famous. In the Legend of the White Snake, a tale told in China for centuries, Xiaoqing is the Green Snake who serves and protects Bai Suzhen, the White Snake. She is loyal and quick to anger.
On a Polish class register the name would stand out at once. It has no imieniny, no Polish diminutive, no local variant. What it keeps is the plain sense of its two syllables: little, and green.
