What Wiwien means

Where Wiwien comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Wiwien comes from Latin. The root is vivus, "alive," and behind it stands the verb vivere, "to live." From vivus the Romans built a clan name, Vivius, and the personal names grew out of that soil. The same root still surfaces in English words such as revive, survive, and vivid. The short meaning given to Wiwien matches it exactly: alive, full of life.

The Latin line runs on through Vivianus, a name borne in Rome and later carried by a saint, Viviana, remembered in the Church on 2 December. Polish calendars keep a second date for the name, 28 February. A child named Wiwien can therefore claim an imieniny of her own, even where the form looks rare on the class register.

The meaning stays close to the root. Alive, and full of life.
