What Wawrzyn means

Where Wawrzyn comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Wawrzyn comes from Latin. Behind it stand laurus, the laurel tree, and Laurentum, an old town in Latium that gave the Roman name Laurentius its shape. Polish borrowed the plant word directly. Wawrzyn means laurel, and laur means triumph, the wreath set on a winner's brow. In Rome that wreath crowned generals and poets, and the image rode along with the name.

The fuller Polish form is Wawrzyniec, the local answer to Lawrence. Laurenty walks beside it as another variant. Saint Wawrzyniec, a deacon killed in Rome in 258, holds the name-day on 10 August, deep in the Polish summer.

Open a school register now and a young Wawrzyniec turns up seldom, an old name in slow return. Friends and teachers shorten him to Wawrzek. The wreath inside the name stays plain laurel, wawrzyn, worn by whoever won the race.
