What Wergiliusz means
Where Wergiliusz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Wergiliusz is the Polish form of Latin Vergilius, the family name of Rome's greatest poet, Publius Vergilius Maro (70 to 19 BC). Scholars cannot say where that name came from. Its origin is unknown.
In late antiquity the spelling drifted from Vergilius to Virgilius, and Latin readers started to hear other words inside it: virgo, a maiden, and virga, a rod or staff. The Polish gloss keeps a pull toward the green, "gałązka latorośli", a shoot of the vine. That sense of maiden and staff was attached later, by ears listening for meaning. It was never the root.
The poet gave the name its long life. He wrote the Aeneid, and centuries later Dante chose him as a guide through hell in the Divine Comedy. The name travels with a long shelf of reading behind it. A Polish child called Wergiliusz today finds few classmates sharing it on the school register. The name stays rare. What he keeps is a Roman surname whose meaning nobody has recovered, glossed in Polish as a young vine shoot.
