What Virginia means

Where Virginia comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Virginia begins in Latin, with the Roman family name Verginius. The sense of "maiden" or "virgin" came later, drawn from the nearby word virgo. So the short meaning grew from association, and the old family name stayed the real root.

The Roman historian Livy records a young Virginia, killed by her own father to spare her from a corrupt magistrate's claim. That grim tale tied the name early to honour and to the unmarried girl.

The name settled in English and Italian. In 1584 the English colony of Virginia took its label from Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, and the link with chastity carried over. Later the writer Virginia Woolf gave it a modern owner. On a Polish class register Virginia looks like a guest, an import rather than a home-grown Wanda or Jadwiga, yet its Polish gloss stays plain: dziewica, czysta, the maiden.
