What Vikram means

Where Vikram comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Vikram comes from Sanskrit vikrama, a word for valour and prowess. The root also names a stride, the wide step of someone who advances without fear. Indian tradition gave the name to Vikramaditya, a legendary king whose court supposedly held nine great scholars.

The meaning stayed close to the name. Vikram Sarabhai founded India's space program. When India landed near the Moon's south pole in 2023, the craft was called Vikram in his honour. Valour, then, of the working kind, applied to problems rather than battles.

In Poland the name is rare. A teacher reading a class register might pause once at Vikram before the Polish names resume. The spelling gives no trouble, and it states its meaning plainly: odwaga, waleczność.
