What Vugar means

Where Vugar comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Vugar enters Polish name lists from outside the familiar Slavic and Latin channels. Its origin is filed simply as other, a label that points away from the saints' calendar and toward the Turkic-speaking world. In Azerbaijani the name appears as Vüqar, and it names a quality rather than a person or place: dignity, pride, self-possession.

The short Polish gloss is godność. That is a weighty word. It means standing and self-worth, the sense that a person must not be made small, and it maps cleanly onto what Vüqar means in its home language. The Azerbaijani chess grandmaster Vugar Gashimov, who died in 2014, carried the name into the record books.

On a school register, Vugar would stand apart from the Kacprs and the Zuzannas, an unfamiliar shape among familiar ones. A teacher reading the roll might pause on it. And the name means, without ornament, godność: dignity.
