What Vittoria means

Where Vittoria comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Vittoria is the Italian form of a Latin word that meant plainly what it says: victory. In Rome, Victoria was the goddess who crowned winning generals, a counterpart to the Greek Nike, and her name slid from the altars into common speech as the ordinary noun for triumph. Italian softened the hard c into a doubled t. Vittoria was the result.

One woman gave the name its literary standing. Vittoria Colonna, born in 1490, wrote sonnets that Michelangelo admired and answered in verse, and she is still read as one of the major Italian poets of her century. Her name held its meaning long before her fame.

On a Polish class register, Vittoria sits among the Zuzannas and the Julias, an Italian spelling with a Roman past. The doubled t marks it as a guest from another language. The meaning travels with it, intact: zwycięstwo, victory.
