Viera

Viera grows from a Slavic root meaning faith. Polish speakers catch it at once in wiara, the ordinary word for belief. The name is the Slovak counterpart of Vera, and the two travel together across Slavic languages.

The sense of faith here is literal, not a later gloss. Early Slavic Christians rendered the Greek name Pistis, which itself means faith, into their own tongue, and Vera along with Viera came from that work. In older calendars Faith stands beside her sisters Hope and Love, counted as daughters of Sophia, wisdom. A child called Viera sits inside that small family of virtue names.

The word is short. Two syllables, one plain idea.

On a Polish class register the name reads clean and legible, easy for a teacher to call and a child to spell, and at the urząd it fits any form without abbreviation. Whatever a bearer makes of it, the root holds steady: Viera means faith, the wiara every Polish speaker already uses in daily speech.
