What Uriasz means

Where Uriasz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Uriasz comes from Hebrew. The name joins "uri," meaning "my light," with "yah," a short form of the divine name Yahweh. Together they give the sense "Yahweh is my light," or in Polish, "moim światłem jest jahwe." The same "uri" element sounds in the name Uriel.

The best-known bearer of the older form is Uriah in the Hebrew Bible. Uriah the Hittite served in King David's army and died at the walls of a besieged city, by David's design. In Polish the figure appears as Uriasz, close to the Latin Urias of the Vulgate. His name outlasted the man.

A boy called Uriasz today is rare. On a Polish school register the name would draw a second look. It has no standard diminutive and no name-day fixed in the common calendar.

The meaning stays legible. Uriasz says that Yahweh is my light.
