Urban

Urban comes from the Latin urbanus, built on urbs, the word for city. The short meaning follows straight from that root: a city dweller. In Rome the same adjective meant polished or well-mannered, the bearing expected of someone brought up inside the walls.

The name traveled through the Church. Several popes chose it, starting with Urban I in the third century. Polish tradition later tied Saint Urban to vine-growers, and farmers watched the weather on his day for signs about the coming harvest.

His imieniny falls on 25 May. A boy named Urban meets his name on that line of the calendar, and again on any official form at the urząd, where urbanus returns to its old sense. The name stays rare in Poland. It reads plainly, and it means what its Latin root said first: a city dweller.
