What Usevalad means

Where Usevalad comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Usevalad grew from Slavic roots that name power in the broadest terms. It joins two old elements: vse, meaning "all," and volod, meaning "rule" or "hold sway." That same volod sits inside Włodzimierz and Vladimir. Put together, the parts give the short meaning, rules all, all-ruler, panujący nad wszystkim.

Usevalad is the Belarusian form of the name Polish speakers know as Wsiewołod. Medieval Rus carried several princes by it. Vsevolod I governed Kyiv in the eleventh century. His descendant Vsevolod III of Vladimir earned the byname "the Big Nest" for his many children, and chronicles from the 1200s record his reign.

Such a name sets a high bar. To promise rule over everything is a large thing to hand a child.

In a Białystok class register Usevalad would stand apart from the Jakubs and Antonis, all four syllables intact. The Belarusian Usevalad and the Polish Wsiewołod hold the same sense: all-ruler.
