What Teimur means

Where Teimur comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Teimur means iron. The word traces to temür, an old Turkic and Mongolic name for the metal, used for ore and blades long before anyone wore it as a name.

That root carried a famous bearer. Timur, the fourteenth-century ruler Europe later called Tamerlane, held the same word, and his name meant iron as well. Teimur keeps to that same stem, shaped in speech across the Caucasus and the lands south of it, where the two vowels in the middle open the sound wider than Timur does.

On a Polish class register, Teimur stands apart from the Piotrs and Kacpers, its "ei" holding two vowels where Polish spelling rarely allows it. The meaning stays plain. Iron does not soften. A child named Teimur wears a word that first meant żelazo, the metal you can strike and it will not break.
