What Thais means

Where Thais comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Thaïs comes from Greek. The oldest guess at its meaning points to "bandage," though even that reading stays uncertain. In Polish name books you will more often find it glossed as "piękna, kwitnąca," beautiful and blossoming, a sense attached to the name long after its Greek beginnings.

History gives Thaïs a real face. She was an Athenian companion of Alexander the Great, and ancient writers credit her with urging the fire that burned Persepolis. Centuries later a different Thaïs appears in Christian legend, an Egyptian woman who left her old life and was remembered as a saint. Anatole France turned that legend into a novel in 1890, and Jules Massenet built an opera on it, whose "Méditation" for violin is still played today.

In a Polish class register the name stands apart. It is short. Five letters, and it opens with a "th" borrowed straight from Greek spelling.

A child named Thaïs carries a Greek word that may once have meant "bandage," now read in Poland as blossoming.
