Svitlana

Svitlana grows from the Slavic root svit, meaning light. In Ukrainian the same word points to daybreak and to the wide world itself, so the name reads as light, radiant. Polish renders that sense as jasna, świetlana.

For a long stretch the name lived mostly on the page. The Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky finished a ballad called Svetlana in 1813, and few people carried the name before his heroine made it fashionable. Svitlana is the Ukrainian form of that name, and the sense of radiance sat in the root already, well before any poet borrowed it. What spread was a spelling for something older.

Read a school register in Lwów or in a Kraków classroom today and a Svitlana will likely sit near the top of the list. The name has no diminutive of its own among the given forms, so it stands as written, no softer nickname folded inside it. It still says light.
