Susanne

Susanne begins in Hebrew, in the word Shoshannah, a name for the lily.

The biblical Susanna wore it first, a woman falsely accused and later cleared, and from her story the name spread across Europe. German and Scandinavian speakers made it Susanne, trimming the older Latin Susanna into something plainer and easier to say.

It means lily. That flower has stayed fixed to the name for centuries, though the sense of purity people attach to a white bloom came later, after the word itself was already old.

In Polish the same root settles as Zuzanna, and the girl who signs that on a form at the urząd is a Zuzia to everyone at her imieniny. One Hebrew word for a flower, and two Polish forms answer to it, the full and the fond, both still meaning lily.
