What Sol means

Where Sol comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Sol comes from Latin "sol," the word for the sun. The Romans gave that same name to their sun god, worshipped in late antiquity as Sol Invictus, the unconquered sun. The root still shows in ordinary words like solar and solstice. The short meaning is plain. Sol means sun.

In Spanish the word never went cold. "Sol" is the sun on a weather map, and it also became a given name, sometimes on its own, sometimes inside María del Sol. Among Sephardic Jews the name moved with the language after the expulsion of 1492, into Morocco and the Balkans.

One bearer is documented and hard to forget. Sol Hachuel, a Jewish girl from Tangier, was executed in Fez in 1834 at seventeen. Painters and writers across Europe kept returning to her story. Whether or not a Polish class register today lists a Sol, the name stays short and bright, three letters for the sun.
