What Snezhana means

Where Snezhana comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Snezhana comes from the Slavic word for snow. Polish keeps that root in `śnieg`, Russian in `sneg`, and the name holds onto the same cold syllable. The short meaning follows directly: snowy, and the snow maiden who stands behind it.

Slavic folklore knows a snow maiden of its own, Snegurochka, a girl shaped from snow who appears in Russian tale and in Rimsky-Korsakov's 1881 opera. Snezhana belongs to that same field of snow words, though it took root most firmly in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Macedonia rather than in Poland. A Polish teacher reading it off a class register hears the `śnieg` in it at once.

The sense here is literal. No later moral was attached, the way "pure" was fixed onto Katarzyna. Snezhana means śnieżna, the snowy one.
