What Serafyma means

Where Serafyma comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Serafyma is the Ukrainian form of a name rooted in Hebrew. The root śaraf means to burn, and from it come the seraphim, the fiery angels who cry above the throne in Isaiah's vision. In that vision they have six wings and stand wrapped in fire. The meaning behind Serafyma is a burning one. The masculine form is Serafin.

The name reached Ukrainian families through the Orthodox world. Serafim of Sarov, a monk who died in 1833, became one of the most venerated saints of the Russian church, and his name passed its flame into the feminine Serafima and the Ukrainian Serafyma. The variant Serafina softens the ending and turns up across Poland and Italy alike.

In a Polish class register today, Serafyma can sit beside a Zofia and a Maja without much fuss. Children rarely need the etymology to feel the sound. The name still means what it meant in Isaiah: a burning one, kin to the seraphim.
