Stefano

Stefano comes from the Greek Stephanos, and stephanos meant a crown or a garland, the ring of woven laurel set on the head of a victor. So the name began as an object before it became a person. Someone who wore it had won something, or was being honored, and the word carried that image of a circle placed above the brow.

The Italian form is the reason most people meet it. Stefano is the standard rendering in Italy, where Stefan and its cousins spread through the churches named for Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose feast falls on the twenty-sixth of December. The Polish sense of the name, wieniec and korona, sits right on the Greek root rather than arriving later.

In a Kraków class register the name reads plainly enough, one Stefan among the rest.
