What Rupert means

Where Rupert comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Rupert grew out of the Germanic name Hrodebert, a compound of hrod, "fame," and beraht, "bright." Put together, they give the short meaning, "bright fame." It shares that root with Robert, and Rupert is the High German form that English speakers took up later.

The name reached England through real bearers. Prince Rupert of the Rhine (1619–1682) commanded Royalist cavalry in the English Civil War, and his name still marks Rupert's Land, the old Hudson's Bay territory in Canada. The poet Rupert Brooke carried it into the twentieth century before he died in 1915.

The German line kept it too. Saint Rupert of Salzburg, an eighth-century bishop, is honoured as a founder of that city, where his day is kept on 24 September. Bright fame, in two languages, from one old word.
