What Rozamunda means

Where Rozamunda comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Rozamunda comes from old Germanic roots, joining hros, meaning horse, to mund, meaning protection. The literal sense is horse protection, chroniąca rumaki in Polish. In the centuries after, a second reading grew up around the name. Latin speakers heard rosa munda, pure rose, and that flower sense was attached later, laid over an older word for a guardian of horses.

The name traveled west long ago. In England it settled as Rosamund, worn most famously by Rosamund Clifford, mistress of Henry II in the twelfth century, remembered as Fair Rosamund. The German form Rosamunde keeps the same bones.

In a Polish class register today, Rozamunda would stand apart from the Zuzannas and the Majas. The name stays rare. Read it back to the start and you find no rose at all, only the horse and the protection set over it.
