In the centuries after, a second reading grew up around the name. Latin speakers heard rosa munda, pure rose, and that flower sense was attached later, laid over an older word for a guardian of horses.
The name traveled west long ago. In England it settled as Rosamund, worn most famously by Rosamund Clifford, mistress of Henry II in the twelfth century, remembered as Fair Rosamund. The German form Rosamunde keeps the same bones.
