What Quoc Hung means

Where Quoc Hung comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Quốc Hùng comes from Vietnamese, built from two Sino-Vietnamese roots. Quốc means country or nation, written 國. Hùng means heroic or powerful, written 雄. Read together, they give the sense recorded here: national hero, powerful nation.

The second syllable keeps deep company in Vietnamese history. The Hùng Kings, the Hùng Vương, are the legendary founders of the first Vietnamese state, Văn Lang, and their title shares that character for the brave and the strong. A boy called Quốc Hùng sits in that lexical family, close to the word for the country itself.

In Poland the name arrives with families of the Vietnamese community, one of the larger such communities in the country. Picture a Warsaw class register: Anna, Piotr, and Quốc Hùng read out by the teacher. On the official form at the urząd the name holds its two words and its tones.

The meaning stays plain. Quốc, the nation, and Hùng, the hero.
