What Qianqian means

Where Qianqian comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Qianqian is a Chinese given name that means beautiful, written most often with the character 倩 doubled into 倩倩. The origin is not European. It reaches back to classical Chinese, where 倩 described a pretty smile. The Book of Songs, the ancient anthology known as Shijing, keeps the line 巧笑倩兮, praising a woman's charming smile with dimples. A child named Qianqian receives a word Chinese poets used for beauty three thousand years ago.

The doubling matters. Repeating 倩 into 倩倩 is an affectionate habit in Chinese given names, the same fondness that softens many of them. It reads warm.

On a Polish class register, Qianqian sits among the Zosias and Kubas as something plainly from elsewhere. It has no Polish name-day, so an imieniny would be borrowed or simply skipped. Short and clear, the meaning holds in either language: beautiful, piękna.
