Qaisar

It carries the sense of "emperor," a cousin of Caesar that traveled east into Arabic. In Poland it's about as rare as a name gets: only ten men answer to it, and no boy has been given it this century.

What Qaisar means

Where Qaisar comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Qaisar begins in Rome. The Latin Caesar was one family's surname before Augustus, then it became the title every emperor took. Arabic borrowed it as Qayṣar, the standing word for the Roman and later Byzantine emperor. The Polish cesarz comes from the same Latin root, and so do German Kaiser and Russian tsar.

In early Islamic sources Qayṣar names the Byzantine ruler, the emperor Heraclius among them. From a title the word passed into use as a personal name in Urdu, Persian, and Arabic, where it still reads as emperor, władca in Polish.

On a Polish class register Qaisar sits among more familiar names, its Latin bones hidden under an Arabic spelling. The sense stays fixed. Caesar went east and came back as a first name meaning emperor, władca.
