Pylyp comes from the Greek Philippos, a compound of philos, "loving," and hippos, "horse." The meaning is direct. It names a lover of horses, miłośnik koni. In the ancient world a name like this belonged to households that could afford to keep and breed the animals, and it moved east into Slavic speech, where Ukrainian gave it the shape Pylyp.
The clearest bearer is Pylyp Orlyk. In 1710, living in exile, this Cossack hetman drafted one of Europe's earliest written constitutions. His name holds a Greek root on a Ukrainian tongue, which is most of the story.
