Przemek

Przemek is the everyday form of Przemysław, a name built from old Slavic parts. The first part, przemysł, once meant ingenuity or shrewd thinking. The second, sław, meant glory. Put together they give the short sense the name still carries: cunning and glorious, przemyślny i sławny.

The name has a royal anchor. Przemysł II was crowned King of Poland in 1295, the first Polish coronation in over two centuries, and he was killed a year later. His name survives in the fuller variant Przemysław and in the older bare form Przemysł, which reads almost like the common noun for industry.

Przemek is what people actually use. A boy christened Przemysław becomes Przemek on the class register, Przemek to friends, Przemysław again only on the form at the urząd. The long version sounds formal. The short one sounds like someone you know.

So the name works on two levels. There is the old compound meaning, thought plus glory, and there is the plain warmth of Przemek. Both point back to the same Slavic root, przemysł.
