Patrizio

Patrizio comes from the Latin patricius, the title Rome gave a member of its founding families, the patres. The word marked a man of the senatorial class, a nobleman, a patrician. In Polish this reads as szlachetnie urodzony, nobly born.

The same Latin name, Patricius, belonged to the fifth-century missionary later known across Europe. Italian took the ending and made it Patrizio. The aristocratic root stayed, though the man who wore the famous version tended a flock rather than a senate.

For an Italian family the name signals old dignity. It travels well. On a Polish class register Patrizio would stand out among the Patryks, and the clerk at the urząd might ask twice how to spell it. The story ends where it began, with patricius, the Roman word for nobly born.
