Pablo

Pablo comes from the Latin Paulus, a Roman family name that meant "small" or "humble." The word described stature before it described a person's character. Spanish shortened Paulus into Pablo, and the name settled across the Spanish-speaking world.

The most famous bearers stretched that meaning almost to its opposite. Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881, made "small" the label of an enormous life. Pablo Neruda did the same in Chilean poetry, writing under a name he chose for himself. The Latin sense of humble sat quietly under both men while their work grew loud.

In Poland the form stays Spanish. A boy named Pablo on a class register signals a family with a Spanish thread, or simply a liking for the sound. No Polish diminutive softens it. It arrives whole and stays whole.

The root still means what it meant in Rome: small, humble.
