What Paris means

Where Paris comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Paris comes from Greek, and its oldest layer is uncertain. In Homer's Iliad the name belongs to the Trojan prince who carried off Helen, a figure also called Alexandros. Scholars link the short sense "wrestler" to the young man's herding years on Mount Ida, though that meaning stays doubtful. The root looks pre-Greek, older than the tales built on top of it.

The name later grew an English life of its own. Shakespeare gave "Paris" to a suitor in Romeo and Juliet, County Paris, who courts Juliet and dies at her tomb. English readers met the name there long before it belonged to actual children.

That doubtful "wrestler" is a gloss added by later hands, not the origin. Short. Today the name reads as English to many Polish parents, though its bones are Greek. On a class register in Kraków, "Paris" would sit among Polish forms with no diminutive of its own. What travels with it is the Trojan prince and the plain, unproven meaning: wrestler.
