What Oktavian means

Where Oktavian comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Oktawian comes from Latin, from octavus, the word for eighth. Roman families once folded number into their names, and a child could be marked by order of birth. The name grew out of the gens Octavia, one of Rome's old houses.

Its most famous bearer began life as Gaius Octavius. After Julius Caesar adopted him, he took the name Octavianus, the form historians still use for his early years. Later he became Augustus, first emperor of Rome. The plain number stayed under the title.

In Poland the spelling softens. Oktawian for a son, Oktawia for a daughter. A teacher reads it off the class register, checks attendance, and the Latin count is still sitting there. Ósmy. Eighth.
