Odo

Odo comes from the Germanic root od, which named wealth, inheritance, and property. The same element sits inside Otto and Otho, so the two names are cousins from one word. Long before it meant riches in the abstract, od pointed at land held and passed down, the estate a family owned.

The name traveled well through medieval Europe. Odo of Cluny led that reforming abbey in the tenth century. Odo of Bayeux, a bishop, appears in the record of the Norman conquest. In West Francia a king carried it as Eudes, ruling in the 880s.

Poland kept the shorter Latin form. On a school register or an official form at the urząd, Odo reads as compact and old. It has two syllables and no diminutive of its own.

The meaning has not drifted. Where a Polish dictionary glosses it, the words are dziedzictwo and majątek, inheritance and estate. That is the sense the Germanic od carried from the start.
