Osnat is the modern Hebrew form of the biblical Asenath. In Genesis 41:45 she is the Egyptian woman given to Joseph as a wife, daughter of Potiphera, a priest of On. The root of the name is Egyptian. Scholars read it as "belonging to the goddess Neith," a warrior and weaver deity honoured at Sais.
So a name held by Jewish families keeps a foreign goddess sealed inside it. That contradiction is ancient. Asenath became the mother of Ephraim and Manasseh, and later rabbinic legend laboured to account for her, some stories recasting her as a convert who joined Israel.
In modern Israel the name lives on plainly. On a Polish class register it would sit rare among the Zuzannas and Oliwias. The short meaning stays fixed to it: belonging to the goddess Neith.
