Ofri

What Ofri means

Where Ofri comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Ofri comes from Hebrew, built on the noun `ofer`, a fawn or young deer, with the possessive ending `-i`. So the name reads as a small declaration: my fawn. The word for the animal carries a sense of grace and quickness, and the personal ending turns a creature of the field into something claimed and named.

The fawn is not a stray image in Hebrew. The Song of Songs returns to the young deer more than once, comparing the beloved to `ofer ha-ayalim`, a fawn among the harts. Ofri sits close to that older poetry, keeping the animal at the root of the sound.

In Israel the name spread in the later twentieth century, when nature words gained ground as given names. It is worn by women and by men.

A Polish teacher reading a class register meets Ofri without a Polish name-day to attach to it. No source records a Polish meaning, and the name keeps its Hebrew one instead. That meaning stays literal and small: my fawn.
