What Óskar means

Where Óskar comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Óskar begins with two Germanic words. Os meant a god, and gar meant a spear. Joined, they give the sense god's spear, in Polish boża włócznia.

There is a second reading, and it arrived later. Macpherson's Ossian poems gave Europe a hero named Oscar, an Irish warrior whose name splits into os, deer, and cara, friend. That deer friend meaning traveled with the poems. Napoleon loved them. He stood as godfather to the future Oscar I of Sweden, born in 1799, and chose the name for him. From that Swedish king the form spread across Scandinavia and back into Poland as Oskar.

Two roots, two meanings. One says spear, one says deer. A Polish class register on the first day of school still lists the boy as Oskar, without the accent that marks the older spelling óskar.
