Nimrod
A Hebrew name read as "rebel", though in Poland it more often carries the sense of a keen hunter. It stays rare: only about a hundred men here answer to it, and it goes to almost no newborns now.
Nimrod Pronunciation

What Nimrod means
Where Nimrod comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Nimrod comes from Hebrew, and its oldest bearer is a biblical one. Genesis 10:9 calls him a mighty hunter before the Lord, the first great man on earth. That single line is why Polish dictionaries gloss the name as myśliwy, a zapalony łowca, an eager hunter.
The other meaning runs the opposite way. Rabbinic readers tied Nimrod to the Hebrew root marad, to rebel, and saw in the hunter a man who defied God. So the name holds two possible senses: hunter and rebel. This rebel reading came later. It is not the plain origin of the word.
In modern Israel the name shed that darker edge. Nimrod became an ordinary secular name for boys, and a hilltop fortress in the Golan Heights still carries it, Qal'at Namrud. A Polish teacher reading a class register would rarely meet it. The name stays rare here. What travels with it is plain: a Hebrew origin, the hunter, the rebel.
