In the Azerbaijani epic of Köroğlu, Nigar Hanım is the hero's first love and his sharpest counselor. She sends word to warn him, she rides out with him across the plains, and the tale of their escape became one of the best known in the folklore. People call her Nigar Hanım to this day. A real bearer carried it into modern letters too: the Azerbaijani poet Nigar Rafibeyli, born 1913.
On a Polish class register, Nigar sits among the Zuzannas and Amelias as an arrival from elsewhere. It has no imieniny of its own on the Polish calendar. The short meaning stays plain: ukochana, beloved.
