What Nichita means

Where Nichita comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Nichita begins in Greek. The source is Niketas (Νικήτας), built on nikē, the word for victory, so the meaning runs plain and old: victor, or in Polish zwycięzca.

From there the name moved east and south through the Orthodox world. Saint Nicetas the Goth, a fourth-century martyr, gave it a place on the church calendar, and Byzantine and Slavic communities kept the form for centuries. In Romania it took the shape Nichita, and its most-read bearer there is the poet Nichita Stănescu (1933-1983), one of the most widely read Romanian writers of the twentieth century.

On a Polish class register the name reads as a rarity, foreign in spelling yet transparent once you know the root. A child called Nichita answers to a word that meant winning long before it meant anyone in particular. That is the whole of it: from nikē, victory, comes Nichita, the victor.
