Neo

The name Neo begins in Greek, in the element neo-, meaning new. The same root sits inside neon, the gas named for its novelty, and inside words like neolithic. In Polish the sense is nowy. So the name reads as a small announcement of something recent, freshly arrived.

Neo also lives a second life in Southern Africa. In Setswana and Sesotho, Neo is a given name meaning gift, used for girls and boys alike. The two stories do not compete. A Polish parent meets the Greek nowy, a Motswana parent meets the gift, and the four letters hold both without strain.

For many readers now, Neo arrives through one man in a black coat. The 1999 film The Matrix gave its hero that name, and an anagram of "one" sat underneath it. That association is recent, later than the Greek root by millennia.

Neo has no Polish name-day and no established diminutive, so on a class register it stands alone, short and complete. Four letters, Greek at the root, nowy in plain Polish.
