Nemanja comes from Slavic roots, and its short meaning is blunt: without possessions, poor. Read literally, the name describes someone who owns nothing at all.
The most documented bearer is Stefan Nemanja, the Serbian grand prince of the twelfth century who founded the Nemanjić dynasty. He gave up his throne, took the monastic name Simeon, and helped found the monastery of Hilandar on Mount Athos with his son Sava. Later tradition read his name as "the one who has nothing", so the sense of poverty was attached to it afterward. Nobody has proven that reading as the true origin. He died a monk.
