Narayan

Narayan traces back to Sanskrit, where Nārāyaṇa stands among the names of Vishnu. Indian grammarians read it through two parts, nara, meaning man, and ayana, meaning path or dwelling place. The earliest sense points to a home for all people.

The reading that reaches a Polish parent today, protector of all men, came later. It grew from Vishnu's place in devotion, the god who keeps and preserves. That guardian sense settled onto the syllables over centuries of worship, and it is the meaning printed beside the name now: opiekun wszystkich ludzi.

In a Wrocław class register the name would sit without a diminutive and without a Polish variant of its own. Say it slowly. Na-ra-yan holds three open sounds and one old root, nara, the word for man.
