Nora

Nora comes to us from a Slavic root, and its meaning stays short and clear: honour, in Polish cześć and szacunek. That is a lot to place on two syllables. A child named for honour is named for something people give aloud and can also withhold.

The name lives alongside longer forms. Eleonora and Eleanor count as its variants, grander on the page and slower to sign at the bottom of a form at the urząd. Nora keeps that same sense and lets the length go.

Honour was never a fixed thing. To be named Nora is to hold a word that once meant public standing, the regard a community paid out loud.
