What Nada means

Where Nada comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Nada begins in Slavic ground, a short form of Nadežda, the same name that in Polish becomes Nadzieja. The meaning is hope. In Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia the short form long ago stepped out on its own and became a full name a woman keeps for life.

There is a second Nada, and it arrives from Arabic. There the word نَدَى means dew, the water that sits on grass before dawn, and by extension generosity. Two languages reached the same four letters from opposite directions. A Polish teacher calling Nada from a class register cannot tell which one a child was given.

In Poland the name stays uncommon and reads as foreign, nearer the Balkans than Mazovia. The root, though, is known to everyone, because Nadzieja carries the martyr-daughter of Saint Sophia and her name-day on 15 May. Behind the short, borrowed-sounding Nada sits one plain Polish word: nadzieja, hope.
