Magomed

In the North Caucasus, Magomed is the local form of Muhammad, so common in Chechnya and Dagestan that a village holds many at once. In Poland it barely registers: most Poles will never meet one, and it turns up mainly in families with Caucasus roots. The Arabic root means praiseworthy.

What Magomed means

Where Magomed comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Magomed is the form the name Muhammad takes across the North Caucasus. In Chechnya and Dagestan it ranks among the most common men's names, so ordinary that families often tell sons apart by a second name. The root is Arabic, the three consonants ḥ-m-d, which mean to praise. From them Arabic built Muhammad, "the praiseworthy one," and Magomed keeps the same sense: chwalony, godny pochwały.

The vowels shifted as the name traveled north. Arabic Muḥammad became Magomed in Russian transcription, the spelling that ended up on Soviet-era documents and on passports still. Its origin is filed under "other" rather than straight Arabic, because the path ran through Caucasian languages before the name reached any Polish register.

In Poland it appears mostly among families with roots in the Caucasus, many of them Chechen. A teacher reading a class register might find one Magomed among the Jakubs and Piotrs. The meaning stays fixed to its root. Praiseworthy.
