What Maura means

Where Maura comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Maura grows from the Latin word maurus, meaning a Moor or a dark-skinned person. The same root gave Latin its ordinary word for anyone from Mauretania, the old Roman name for northwest Africa. From that word Maura took its short meaning: dark-skinned, the Moor.

The name found its firmest home in English use, though it traveled first through the Christian calendar. Saint Maura of Constantinople, a martyr honored on the third of May, is a documented bearer, and her feast kept the name alive in church records long before it became a given name for ordinary girls. So the Latin sense of dark colouring reached English speakers already softened by centuries of use as a saint's name.

Maura stays close to its root. It has no diminutive of its own, no cross-gender twin, nothing to hide behind.
