Lali

Lali is short. The name grows from Slavic soil, one of those clipped, softly doubled forms that Slavic languages shape out of longer given names. Its sound is round and open, and a small child can say it back on the first try.

The meaning most often tied to Lali travels in from further east. In Georgian, the word "lali" (ლალი) means ruby, the dark red stone, and this sense of a gem is what later fastened itself to the name rather than sitting at its Slavic root. The Polish gloss follows the same thread: rubin. A Slavic form and a Georgian word for a jewel end up sharing one spelling.

On a Polish class register, Lali would sit a little apart from the Julias and Zuzannas nearby. It reads as compact and modern, though its parts are old. No fixed name-day is attached to it, so an imieniny becomes a private choice rather than a calendar entry. What holds across all of this is the small red stone behind the meaning: rubin, the ruby.
