Krzysław

Krzysław belongs to the old stock of Polish dithematic names, the ones built from two meaningful parts. The second part, "-sław," is the Slavic word for glory, and it anchors a large family: Bolesław, Mirosław, Stanisław. The first part points to "wskrzesić," to revive or raise again. Read together, the parts give the meaning kept for the name: reviving glory, or in Polish "wskrzeszający sławę."

That sense of renewal sets Krzysław apart in its family. Most of the glory names praise fame or widen it. Krzysław instead brings it back to life, as if the fame had lapsed and someone called it up again.

The name has a cross-gender twin, Krzysława, formed from the same two elements with a feminine ending. Both are rare now. A teacher reading a class register today would more likely meet a Krzysztof, a different name from a different root. Krzysław keeps the older promise inside it: sława revived.
